Iris sat across from Dash at her favorite fish restaurant. Every table was full, and the noise from customers kept getting louder. She didn’t mind. This was the perfect date—make that night out. No matter what Janice might think and despite his holding her hand on the way to the car—something Iris could get used to easily—this was nothing more than two friends eating dinner together.

And eat she had.

Sweet potato fries, clam chowder, and a fish taco. All three were delicious.

The best part was the easy flow of conversation. From Dash telling her about the progress made with the beta testing for a new product and the success of a gaming team he sponsored at a tournament last weekend, to Iris explaining what the culinary program would be like and the uniform she would wear.

He finished his salmon. “This restaurant is great. No wonder you like it so much.”

“I do.” Tonight, though, ranked as her favorite visit. This wasn’t a fancy or expensive place. They talked about everyday things. But Iris couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt this content. “How did you know to bring me here?”

He wiped his mouth with a napkin. “I asked Henry.”

She struggled to understand when Dash had been her friend for over 15 years. “Why him? We only got to know each other over the holidays.”

Dash shrugged. “Seemed like the best person after you did things together during your staycation. I wasn’t sure if you’d gone out with Tony.”

“I haven’t.” The words burst from her mouth. The guy was a wonderful chef who understood Dash’s eating quirks, but she didn’t want to date him. Not that he’d asked. Yet. But she hoped he never did. As she mentioned to Janice, that would be too awkward. “Though Tony knows most of the best restaurants in town.”

“So do I,” Dash said in a slightly annoyed tone. “But I wanted to know your favorites.”

She sipped her iced tea. “You succeeded.”

“Thanks, but I’m sure Henry will want all the credit.”

Dash’s grin brightened his face. He really was handsome. More so now that he’d grown into his height and features. His blue shirt intensified his eyes, turning them a cornflower blue and making them pop.

She took another drink.

The server, a young woman dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, placed the bill folder on the table, and removed their plates.

Dash placed a credit card inside. “I’ve enjoyed spending time with you this week.”

“Same, and I admit it’s great to get out of the house. Not that there’s anything wrong with being there, but it’s big—”

“And lonely.” His mouth twisting, he stared at his nearly empty plate.

Uh-oh. This wasn’t good. “Dash?”

He looked up with a pained expression. “I’m sorry for not being a better friend. Even when we did stuff—which wasn’t as often as I thought—it was at the house. We never went out like this. I remember you asking me to do things with you, but then you stopped. Why?”

“You really want to know?” She didn’t think he would.
